7 Invoice Simple Alternatives for 2026, Free and Paid
Invoice Simple is a capable phone-first invoicing app, but its plans start at $6.99 a month for three invoices, and on the web there is no free plan beyond a 14-day trial. If that is what brought you here, this page compares seven alternatives on the things that actually differ: what is free, whether invoices are capped, whether you need an account, whether the free version shows ads, and what sending and getting paid cost. Every price was checked on September 17, 2026.
The short answer
- You need a PDF today and do not want an account: Invoice to PDF — unlimited invoices, no watermark, no ads, and a free dashboard if you do sign in.
- You want free bookkeeping and card payments in one app: Wave — the Starter plan is free; cards cost 2.9% + 60¢.
- You want the most features for free and can live with a Zoho account: Zoho Invoice — recurring invoices, reminders and a client portal, up to 500 invoices a year.
- Three documents a month are enough, but you want reminders: Bookipi — its free plan includes the automation Invoice Simple sells.
Why people look for an alternative
Invoice Simple sells its plans by volume. Essentials is $6.99 a month for up to three invoices, Plus is $14.99 for up to ten, and only Premium at $21.99 removes the cap — $69.99, $149.99 and $219.99 a year respectively. On the web there is no ongoing free plan, only a 14-day trial of Premium; the mobile app lets you create two documents and send one before it asks for a subscription.
That model is fine for a busy contractor on Premium. It is expensive for occasional invoicing: three invoices for $6.99 is $2.33 per invoice, and the cap is monthly, so a quiet month does not roll over. A freelancer sending eight invoices a month needs Plus — $149.99 a year, or $179.88 if paid monthly — for a job the tools below do for nothing.
The reviews show the same split. On Capterra the app scores 3.7 out of 5 across 44 reviews, with ease of use at 4.1 and customer service at 3.1; on Trustpilot it holds 3.9 across 379 reviews, 54% of them five stars and 32% one star. The praise is for how simple it is on a phone. The complaints are about plan prices changing, the monthly caps, and refunds after cancelling.
So the useful question is not "what is better than Invoice Simple" but "what do you actually need": a PDF today, a free app that also takes card payments, or a full invoicing suite. The seven tools below cover all three.

Each alternative in detail
1.Invoice to PDF this site
Free invoice generator: unlimited invoices and PDFs with no account, no watermark and no ads, plus a free dashboard with clients and statuses. Pro adds the sending automation.
This site. Fill in the sheet, download the PDF — no account, no watermark, no ads, no cap. The editor covers what Invoice Simple charges for at the document level: your logo, 159 currencies, tax, discounts and shipping, a deposit line that turns "amount paid" into "balance due", and every label on the invoice is editable, so it can be an estimate, a proforma or an invoice in any language. 26 industry presets fill in the usual line items for trades from plumbers to agencies.
A free account adds the part Invoice Simple calls "invoice management": saved clients, a list of invoices with paid, unpaid and overdue statuses, your business details on every new invoice, and three email sends a month. What is not here yet is the sending automation — unlimited sends from your business name, automatic reminders, recurring invoices — which is the Pro plan at $9.99 a month, launching soon. There is no mobile app; the editor works in a phone browser.
- Best for
- Anyone who needs a professional invoice PDF right now — no account, no cap — and a free place to keep clients and paid/unpaid statuses afterwards.
- Watch out
- No mobile app and no card payments yet; the sending automation (Pro) is launching soon.
Plans and prices, checked September 17, 2026
- Free — free: Unlimited invoices and PDFs, editable labels, 159 currencies, deposits, a dashboard with clients and statuses, 3 email sends a month
- Pro — $9.99/mo or $99/yr: Unlimited sends from your business name, automatic reminders, recurring invoices, estimates approved online, 0% Pay Now fee — launching soon
- Business — $19.99/mo or $199/yr: Five seats, reports for your accountant, batch actions — waitlist
2.Wave
Free accounting with invoicing built in. Unlimited invoices and estimates on the free Starter plan; Wave earns on card payments, and Pro adds a few conveniences.
Wave is the closest thing to "Invoice Simple, but free and unlimited" — with the caveat that it is an accounting app. The free Starter plan includes unlimited invoices and estimates, bills, and double-entry bookkeeping, and you can switch on Wave Payments to take cards at 2.9% + 60¢ (Amex 3.4% + 60¢; bank payments 1%, $1 minimum). One thing to know: emailing an invoice from inside Wave, automatic late-payment reminders and recurring invoices all need Payments switched on or the Pro plan — on a plain Starter account you copy a link or download the PDF and send it yourself.
Pro is $19 a month or $190 a year. What it buys is modest: the 60¢ fee is waived on the first ten card payments each month, you can add users, import bank transactions automatically, and capture unlimited receipts. If you only invoice, Starter is the plan.
- Best for
- US and Canadian businesses that want free bookkeeping and invoicing together and plan to take card payments.
- Watch out
- It is an accounting app, so there is more to set up than an invoice; automatic reminders and recurring invoices need Wave Payments switched on or the Pro plan; available in the US and Canada only.
Plans and prices, checked September 17, 2026
- Starter — free: Unlimited invoices, estimates, bills and bookkeeping; online payments optional
- Pro — $19/mo or $190/yr: No 60¢ fee on the first 10 card payments a month, extra users, bank imports, unlimited receipt capture
3.Zoho Invoice
A complete invoicing suite that Zoho gives away to bring you into its ecosystem: quotes, recurring invoices, reminders, a customer portal and reports, all free — within limits.
Zoho Invoice is the free tier of Zoho's finance suite, and it gives away more than most paid plans: quotes, recurring invoices, automatic reminders, a customer portal where clients see their invoices, expense and time tracking, and reports. The catch is in the limits — 500 invoices a year, two users, three projects — and in the "Powered by Zoho Invoice" branding. An account that goes quiet for more than 180 days is deleted within the following 20 days, with a warning first.
There is no paid plan; when you outgrow it, Zoho points you to Zoho Billing or Zoho Books. For a freelancer with a steady client list who wants everything automated, it is the strongest free suite on this page.
- Best for
- Someone who wants the most complete free invoicing suite and does not mind a Zoho account, Zoho branding and a 500-invoice yearly cap.
- Watch out
- Accounts inactive for more than 180 days are deleted within the following 20 days, with a warning first; the natural next step is a paid Zoho product.

- Free — free: Up to 500 invoices a year, 2 users, 3 projects, 2 organizations; "Powered by Zoho Invoice" branding
4.Bookipi
App-first invoicing whose free plan includes the automation — recurring invoices, automatic overdue reminders, deposits — but caps you at three documents per 30 days.
Bookipi flips Invoice Simple's packaging: the automation is free and the volume is what you pay for. The free plan includes recurring invoices, automatic overdue reminders, deposits, Tap to Pay and three e-signatures a month — but three documents per 30 days, and quotes, estimates and credit notes count towards the three. Starter is $9.99 a month ($7.60 when billed yearly, $91.20 a year) and its only change is removing that cap; the pricing page lists nothing else in the column. Professional is $52 a month.
If three documents a month cover you, Bookipi's free plan includes automation that Invoice Simple only sells from Plus. Past that, the $9.99 Starter is the same price as Invoice to PDF's Pro, minus the no-account editor.
- Best for
- Three documents a month or fewer, with reminders and recurring invoices at no cost; people who invoice from a phone.
- Watch out
- The cap is the business model: the $9.99 Starter plan changes nothing but the cap.
Plans and prices, checked September 17, 2026
- Free — free: 3 documents per 30 days (invoices, quotes, estimates and credit notes all count), recurring invoices, automatic reminders, deposits, 3 e-signatures a month
- Starter — $9.99/mo or $91.20/yr: Unlimited invoices — the only change from Free
- Professional — $52/mo or $468/yr: Higher tier; the pricing page lists no distinct features
5.Invoice-Generator.com
The other no-account generator: unlimited invoices and PDFs for free, with ads, and account features for sending. It publishes no price list.
Invoice-Generator.com does the same job as Invoice to PDF's free layer: unlimited invoices and PDFs, no account. The differences are the ads — the free version shows them — and a documented API with 100 free invoices a month, which is unique on this list. It has twelve document generators, from quotes and credit notes to receipts and proformas; sending an invoice needs an account, and its guides describe payment links, view tracking, automatic reminders and recurring invoices.
What the site does not publish is a price list: the only paid product its public pages mention is an API subscription, although two recent Trustpilot reviews mention a subscription. Trustpilot rates it 4.7 from about 295 reviews, and the one recurring complaint is the pop-up ads.
- Best for
- The same job as Invoice to PDF — a quick PDF with no account — plus a documented API with 100 free invoices a month.
- Watch out
- Ads on the free version, and no public price list for anything beyond the API.
Plans and prices, checked September 17, 2026
- Free — free: Unlimited invoices and PDFs, ads; sending needs an account
- Paid plans — No public price list: Its public pages mention no paid web plan; two recent Trustpilot reviews mention a subscription
- API — Free tier: 100 invoices a month free, paid tiers above that
Ratings: Trustpilot 4.7/5 (295 reviews; the recurring complaint is the pop-up ads, Sep 2026).
6.Hiveage
Invoicing that meters clients instead of invoices: unlimited invoices and estimates for up to five clients on the free plan.
Hiveage meters clients rather than invoices. Its free plan allows five clients and, for them, unlimited invoices, estimates, and time and expense tracking, with payment gateways on every plan. Basic ($19 a month, $16 billed yearly) raises the limit to 50 clients and adds financial reports; Pro ($29) allows 250 clients, five team members, a custom domain and automatic payment reminders; Plus ($49) allows 1,000 clients, ten users and the API.
It suits the opposite shape of business from Invoice Simple's caps: a few clients billed every month, such as retainers. Note where the automation sits — reminders only from $29.
- Best for
- A handful of clients billed often — retainers and monthly service contracts.
- Watch out
- The sixth client costs $19 a month, and automatic reminders start at $29.
Plans and prices, checked September 17, 2026
- Free — free: 5 clients; unlimited invoices, estimates, time and expense tracking
- Basic — $19/mo or $192/yr: 50 clients, financial reports
- Pro — $29/mo or $300/yr: 250 clients, 5 team members, custom domain, email customization, automatic reminders
- Plus — $49/mo or $504/yr: 1,000 clients, 10 users, API
7.FreshBooks
Small-business accounting with strong invoicing and phone support. No free plan; the two cheaper tiers cap billable clients.
FreshBooks is on this list for the person who is leaving Invoice Simple because the business outgrew it. There is no free plan — a 30-day trial without a card, then a 30-day money-back guarantee. Lite is $23 a month for five billable clients; Plus is $43 for 50 and adds proposals, retainers, accountant access and bank reconciliation; Premium is $70 for unlimited clients. Yearly plans are 10% off, and card payments cost 2.9% + 30¢. The prices went up in early 2026.
You get real accounting, projects, expenses and phone support. You also pay more for Lite in a year ($248.40) than for Invoice Simple's unlimited Premium ($219.99), so it only makes sense if you need the accounting.
- Best for
- A business ready for accounting — expenses, projects, an accountant login — with phone support.
- Watch out
- Prices went up in early 2026; Lite and Plus cap billable clients; the cheapest plan costs more per year than Invoice Simple's unlimited tier.
Plans and prices, checked September 17, 2026
- Lite — $23/mo or $248.40/yr: 5 billable clients, unlimited invoices and estimates, expenses
- Plus — $43/mo or $464.40/yr: 50 billable clients, proposals, retainers, accountant access, bank reconciliation
- Premium — $70/mo or $756/yr: Unlimited billable clients, project profitability

Switching from Invoice Simple
There is nothing to migrate. Invoices are documents; the only things worth carrying over are your numbering and your client list.
- Download your existing PDFs from Invoice Simple before you cancel, so you keep your records outside the app.
- Continue the numbering. If your last invoice was 0142, make the next one 0143 — in Invoice to PDF the number is a field on the sheet, and an account remembers the next one for you. Our guide to invoice numbers covers the formats.
- Enter each client once. With a free account, a client's details are saved the first time you invoice them and filled in after that.
- Keep your email habit. Until you use a tool that sends for you, attach the PDF to your own email — our invoice email template is three copy-and-paste messages.
