Sales Tax Calculator
Add sales tax to a price — or work backwards from a tax-inclusive total to the net amount and the tax hiding inside it. Free, in your browser.
Sales tax
Both directions, one formula
Forward is simple: tax = price × rate, so $100 at 7% adds $7.00 for a $107.00 total. Backwards trips people up: to pull the tax out of a tax-inclusive total you divide by 1 + rate — $107.00 ÷ 1.07 = $100.00 net — never multiply the total by the rate, which overstates the tax. The reverse mode matters exactly when a client agreed to an "all-in" price and your invoice still has to show the net line and the tax separately.
In the generator, you enter the net amounts and the rate — the tax line, the total and the math print themselves on the PDF.
Sales tax FAQ
What rate should I charge?
The combined state + local rate where the sale is taxed — in the US that ranges from 0% (Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware) to around 10% in the highest city-plus-state combinations. Your state's department of revenue publishes the official tables; when in doubt, ask your accountant which rate and rules apply to what you sell.
Do freelancers charge sales tax on services?
Depends on the state and the service: many states exempt professional services entirely, others tax specific ones (design deliverables, software, repairs). This is worth confirming once for your exact offering — charging it wrongly in either direction is an expensive habit.
How do I show tax on the invoice?
Net lines first, then tax as its own visible line with the rate named, then the total. The generator does this automatically from the Tax field — and its editable labels let you call it Sales Tax, VAT or GST to match your jurisdiction.
