Parts, permits and the lines that get questioned
- Parts: one agreed number. "Parts: 40-gal gas water heater, pan, flex lines, valve — $1,240" — itemize in the description, not the math. Your price includes sourcing, warranty and the truck that carried it.
- Permits as a pass-through. "City plumbing permit (at cost) — $146" — who pays is set by your contract and local rules; the invoice just makes it visible instead of buried.
- Haul-away and disposal are work. "Remove & dispose old water heater — $75" — name it or donate it.
- Warranty in the notes, not a line. "Labor warranty: 12 months on this repair" in the notes field builds trust and costs nothing — the terms live in your agreement.

Plumbing invoicing FAQ
Should I charge a diagnostic fee?
Most plumbers do — finding the problem is skilled work. The trade trick that keeps clients happy: "applied to the repair if you proceed", written right on the line.
Flat rate or hourly — what does the invoice show?
Whichever you quoted. Flat-rate lines name the job and one price; hourly lines need hours and rate. Mixing is normal: a flat-rate install plus an hourly line for the surprise found behind the wall.
How do I bill emergency or after-hours work?
A named emergency line ("Emergency call-out, Sun 11pm") at the premium you stated on the phone. Never fold the premium silently into other numbers — visible premiums get paid, hidden ones get disputed.
Who pays for the permit?
Set by your agreement and local rules — commonly the homeowner, listed as an at-cost pass-through line. Check your local requirements; the invoice's job is only to make it visible.
Do I put my license number on the invoice?
