Troubleshooting, installs and multi-phase jobs

Model Line item looks like Best for
Troubleshooting, hourly "Trace & repair dead circuit, kitchen — 2 hrs × $110" Fault-finding — nobody can flat-rate a mystery
Flat-rate install "Install 14 recessed fixtures, materials incl. — $1,680" Standard installs you've priced a hundred times
Project by phase "Phase 1 of 2: rough-in complete, inspection passed — $3,400" Remodels — invoice at rough-in and at finish, not at the end
Panel / service upgrade "200A panel upgrade — labor, flat rate — $1,900" Big-ticket, quote-first; deposit before ordering the panel

Phase invoicing keeps cash flowing on remodels and matches how inspectors gate the work anyway. Each phase line names its trigger event — "inspection passed" is the cleanest one in the trades.

Materials, permits and inspections

  • Materials as one agreed number. "Materials: 200A panel, breakers, wire, connectors — $1,150" — the description carries the detail, the price stays one figure. Copper prices are your business; the agreed total is the client's.
  • Permit and inspection visible. "Electrical permit & inspection fee (at cost) — $210" — pass-throughs build trust and remind the client the work is being inspected, which is worth money.
  • Code corrections are their own line. Found aluminum wiring or a double-tapped breaker mid-job? Stop, show, agree — then "Additional: correct double-tapped breakers (per Aug 14 walkthrough) — $180". Never silently absorbed, never silently added.
  • License number by your business name. Many jurisdictions require it on invoices — the editable labels let you add "Lic. #" wherever your state expects it.

An electrician invoice example

Invoice INV-0164 · Issued Aug 21, 2026 · Due Aug 31, 2026 (Net 10)

From: Volt & Vine Electric · jobs@voltvine.example · Lic. #E-77120

Bill to: Harbor Physio Clinic · Ref: quote Q-2026-31

  • 200A panel upgrade — labor, flat rate per quote — $1,900.00
  • Materials: panel, breakers, wire, connectors — $1,150.00
  • Electrical permit & inspection fee (at cost) — $210.00

Subtotal $3,260.00 · Amount paid −$1,300.00 · Balance due $1,960.00

Notes: Inspection scheduled Aug 26 · Deposit received on quote acceptance

The invoice mirrors the quote line for line — that bridge is what gets big-ticket electrical work approved without a call. The mechanics are in invoice vs estimate.

Electrician invoicing FAQ

How do I bill troubleshooting fairly?

Hourly, with a stated first-hour minimum, and describe what was traced and fixed — "found and repaired open neutral in kitchen circuit" reads as skill, not as time billed for wandering.

Rough-in and finish — one invoice or two?

Two. Invoice each phase when its inspection passes — the inspector's sign-off is an approval trigger nobody argues with, and your cash arrives months earlier on long remodels.

Do I take a deposit on a panel upgrade?

Yes — enough to cover the panel and materials before you order them (commonly 30–50%). Show it deducted on the final invoice so the balance due is unambiguous.

Who pays the permit fee?

Usually the client, as an at-cost pass-through line — but it is set by your agreement and local rules, so confirm your jurisdiction's practice and put the number where the client can see it.

A commercial client wants Net 30 — take it?

Commercial electrical runs on terms; Net 30 with a clear due date on the invoice is normal. Send it the day the phase completes and follow up on schedule — the payment terms guide covers the trade-offs.
