Deposits, retainers and the balance due

Booking deposit first. Most photographers take a deposit of 25–50% to hold the date — invoice it the day the client says yes, because the date is off the market from that moment.
Final invoice before delivery. For weddings and events, common practice is the balance due on or before the event date — and the gallery is delivered after the invoice is settled.
